About the ride from Naples to Sorrento

A brash mix of hectic warrens and rich medieval culture, Naples is a place that takes Italian charm with a twist that’s uniquely its own. The capital of Campania boasts an endless list of attractions to explore. But, after a few days in the city, you might be up for a little exploring. There’s no better way to do that than to take a trip from Naples to Sorrento.

Contrasting Naples’ high-octane energy, the town of Sorrento enchants visitors in a much more laid-back fashion. With harsh, craggy cliffs on the outside, and delightful, citrus tree-lined streets on the inside, this place is the large-scale equivalent of a cannoli.

Sorrento lies around 30 miles south of Naples, just across the Bay of Naples. The two towns are connected by a scenic stretch of the Campanian coast, a popular Italian getaway destination. Being so close to each other, an excursion from Naples to Sorrento can work out even on a day trip.

The question is, how do you get from one town to the other?

  1. Take a ferry. Quick and easy, a ferry ride from Naples to Sorrento is definitely the most convenient way to travel between the two cities. Combine that with a low price and picture-perfect views of the coast, and you’ve got yourself a ride made for enjoyment. The journey takes just half an hour, and you have 6 departure times to choose from every day.
  2. Go by minivan. Minivans are a popular way of getting around in Italy. Quick and comfortable, these shuttles are the ideal option if you’re travelling with friends. You can choose a private minivan and have the vehicle for your group, or a shared one for a lower price. The journey takes just over an hour.
  3. Hire a private car. If you’re all about travelling in style, hiring a private car is the choice for you. Take up to two friends and sit back as the luxury sedan takes you along the scenic roads of Southern Italy.
  4. Go by train. If you’re on a tight budget, or are on a longer road trip in Italy, taking a train might suit you best. This is by far the most affordable way of getting from Sorrento to Naples, but you lose out on some of the creature comforts of the other rides. You’ll have two operators to choose from, both of which are making a few stops along the way.

What to see when traveling from Naples to Sorrento

A ride from Naples to Sorrento will put you against some of the most epic scenery of the Apennine Peninsula, and that’s saying a lot. What you’ll be able to see will mostly depend on whether you’re going by sea or by land. Either way, you’re in for some pretty spectacular views!

If you’re going to Sorrento by ferry, you’ll be leaving from Porto di Napoli, one of the largest seaports on the Mediterranean. This is your last chance to admire the city’s magnificent walls, with the mighty Ovo Castle at the forefront. Time to wave goodbye!

As you make your way south, it’s time to turn towards the shimmering waters of the Bay of Naples. To the east, you’ll be greeted by the beautiful Campanian coast. To the south, the city of Sorrento, with the iconic isle of Capri at its side

If you’re making your way to Sorrento by land, you’ll have nothing less to admire. The well-maintained roads are lined with pines and oaks typical of southern Italy. On your right, the glistening Bay of Naples. And on the left, the towering presence of Mount Vesuvius, one of the few remaining active volcanoes in Europe.

Speaking of Mount Vesuvius, you can hop off the road to check out the ancient city of Pompeii. Learn about its history and culture, and how it all came to an end when the massive volcano had its woeful eruption.

Leaving Pompeii behind, you’ll soon be making your final approach to Sorrento. As pine lined alleys take turns with commanding views of the Bay, you’ll quickly realize that you’ve come to a special place. Explore the city’s temples and cathedrals, check out its lovely cafes, and stroll its orange groves. This is what Campania is all about.

Getting from Naples to Sorrento

Going by ferry

Getting a ferry from Naples to Sorrento is easy as one, two, three. You’ll have two operators to choose from, Alilauro and NLG (Navigazione Libera del Golfo). Together, they combine for a total of 6 departures per day. Both offer tickets for under $20, with return tickets available, as well. A pretty cheap price all things considered.

Amenities-wise, Alilauro and NLG are pretty comparable. You have air-conditioned cabins and toilets on both ferries. In case you’d like to get a tan, Alilauro does offer outdoor seating.

NLG ferries have a luggage policy that allows one bag per person, up to 50cm x 30cm x 15cm in size. Alilauro has the same requirement, with a slightly higher 50 cm x 35 cm x 20 size allowance. If you’re bringing more luggage, you can pay an extra fee. Same goes if you want to bring your bike or a pet.

Both ferries depart from the Naples Ferry Terminal and land at the Port of Sorrento.

Taking a minivan

Taking a minivan to Sorrento is a great option if you’re bringing a lot of luggage. You can choose between two operators: Enjoy Travelling, and DTS Travel Group. Both offer private vans, where you’d have the entire vehicle to your group, or shared vans.

If you’re traveling with a larger crew, a private van is the way to go. The prices range between $150 and $192, with 6-pax and 8-pax options available. If you’re going solo or in a pair, you can choose between the $30 Enjoy Travelling van, or the $44 van from DTS.

All vans boast comfortable seating and A/C. One key difference between the two operators is the amount of luggage you’re allowed to bring.

The Enjoy Travelling shared van lets you bring a 20 kg bag plus a 7 kg carry-on. If you take the private van, each person in your group can bring two 20 kg bags, plus the 7 kg carry-on. DTS vans allow a single 20 kg bag, regardless of whether you’re in a private or shared van.

Going by private car

Booking a private car to Sorrento is for those of you who like to travel in style. The cars operating between the two cities are luxury sedans, which carry between 1 and 3 people. You won’t be getting in a car with some random person behind the wheel, by the way. These rides are also operated by Enjoy Travelling and DTS.

That means you get the extra comfort without losing out on the sense of security.

Enjoy Travelling runs their trips for $127, while DTS is a little more affordable with a price of $101 for the vehicle. Again, the only difference between the two operators is the luggage policy. You can bring two 20 kg bags with Enjoy Travelling, whereas DTS only allows you to bring one.

Going by train

You can choose between two train lines running from Sorrento to Naples: Circumvesuviana and Campania Express. The former is your typical commuter train. In terms of comfort, it’s pretty bare-bones, so you might need to stand for the duration of the 90 minute journey. There are no luggage racks, so you’ll also need to keep your possessions at your side the whole time. That said, the ride is just $6, which is seriously cheap.

If that sounds a little too rough, you can go with the more comfortable Campania Express train. This option provides guaranteed seating, luggage racks and air conditioning. A ticket will run you around $10, but you’ll also reach Naples in 30 minutes less.
