About the ride from Batangas to Caticlan, Panay Island

Traveling from Batangas to Caticlan is one of the most popular ways of reaching Panay Island from Luzon Island.

After you’ve enjoyed all the excitement and adventure of the Philippines' biggest island, you might be eager to move on to arguably its most famous region, Panay Island, which is a tiny trip from the famous sands and shores of Boracay.

The distance between Batangas and Caticlan measures in at around 300km (186 miles), but your travel distance will vary according to how you decide to take the trip.

You have three options for making the journey:

  • Take a direct ferry from Batangas to Caticlan, which typically takes between 9 and 15 hours. You can take this journey either during the day or overnight
  • Take a combination of several buses and ferries to get from Batangas to Caticlan, which will likely take more than a full day
  • Fly from Manila to Caticlan, which will likely take around 6 or 7 hours allowing for check in, and for getting from Batangas to Manila

Of these options, the direct ferry is typically the best approach, but more on that later.

For many people, Panay is the most ‘must-visit’ island in the Philippines. With golden beaches, brilliant seafood, excellent ecotourism opportunities, jagged mountains and lots of nearby island adventures, it’s the perfect microcosm of what every tourist wants from the Philippines.

If you’ve been exploring Manila and you’re keen to move on to quieter islands elsewhere, Panay Island is often the logical choice - and journeying between Batangas and Caticlan is the most logical way to tackle the trip.

What to see when traveling from Batangas to Caticlan

What you’ll see on your journey to Caticlan from Batangas completely depends upon how and when you take the trip.

If you choose to take the journey by air, you of course won’t see much.

If you travel via a combination of various buses and ferries, you’ll be treated to a cornucopia of views taking in seas, shores, distant mountains, small settlements and various ferry ports.

If you travel on a direct ferry, your views will depend upon when you travel.

If you take an overnight sleeper ferry, you won’t see much except your own eyelids. But on a daytime ferry, you’ll enjoy excellent island views, making it a brilliant way to get acquainted with the region, its waters, and the seemingly endless islands which make up the nation.

At some points on this journey, you’ll find yourself motoring along barren stretches of sea, with nothing but water on the horizon. Other times, you’ll see the outline of distant islands or hear the gentle revving and roaring of other passing boats.

If you’re lucky enough to be on your ferry during sunrise or sunset, it’ll be one of the most incredible experiences you have in the Philippines.

How to get from Batangas to Caticlan

Taking a ferry

This is by far the easiest, prettiest and most logical way to make the trip. When you’re exploring an island nation, it’s of course best to tackle as many journeys as you can by boat. Without traveling by boat, you’re missing out on a huge part of the island nation experience.

But even more than that, traveling on a direct ferry is very simple. You buy one ticket, you make one journey, and you’ve made your way from one exciting destination to another.

The views along the way are incredible, while the journey itself is very comfortable. You get a cabin to sleep in, with a small curtain for when you want some shut-eye and privacy. These cabins are offered on both daytime and nighttime trips, so you can catch some sleep no matter what time of day you’re traveling.

On these ferries, you get toilets, food, drinks, soft beds and plenty of space, so it’s a comfortable, luxurious experience. Some ferries even offer perks such as TVs and power sockets.

Taking a combination of buses and ferries

This approach is a pretty complicated way to reach Caticlan from Batangas.

If you choose this approach, you’ll take a ferry from Batangas to the island of Mindoro, before traveling north to south through Mindoro and catching another ferry from southern Mindoro to Caticlan.

If you like an adventure, this might be a fun approach, but that’s where the positives end. It’s a lengthy choice, it’s often expensive, you need several tickets and it’s usually pretty confusing. If you’re on any sort of time schedule, it’s not a great idea to travel this way.

Flying from Manila to Caticlan

Again, this approach is a little complex. Since you can’t fly directly from Batangas to Caticlan, you’ll need to head north from Batangas to Manila before catching a flight from Manila to Caticlan (and Godofredo P. Ramos Airport).

This is the quickest option, but it's usually a pretty stressful approach. First, you need to book your flight from Manila to Caticlan, then you need to reach Manila from Batangas in time for your flight.

It’s also a pretty pricey option, as flying is of course more expensive than using buses or ferries.
