The most important thing to say is that the information about the length of the train trip was very wrong. I took the First Class Special Express Train from Luxor to Alexandria. According to the information I received from BookAway the trip would take 9 hours. In fact the trip took 14 hours. To my knowledge the train was not delayed. It moved relatively fast and did not stop for longer periods. Apparently it simply takes about 14 hours to get to Alexandria from Luxor.
Otherwise, it was a fine trip. The first class is not very clean and the carriage a bit old, but the chair was big and comfortable with plenty of space for the legs and the back of the chair could be reclined well.
Nothing good to say. We ordered and paid for 1st class tickets. Had to chase agent several times before they arrived. They were 2nd class - confirmed by class printed on ticket, by carriagemarked 2nd class and by Egyptian train ticket office at Cairo: bookaway has tried to insist they were 1st class and refused a refund. An insult.
The markup by Bookawaywas over 50%.
The train was nothing like picture above. Very old and dirty: broken seats: wc was disgusting: carriage door did not shut properly so smoke came in from smokers.
Picture attached makes it look a lot better than it was!
Would have been expected if paying Egyptian prices but at us$65 definitely way overpriced.
All other agents etc we have encountered in Egypt have been friendly, efficient and honest: shame Bookaway such a contrast to this.
The train was about half an hour late, would be se one class in Europe, but ok and faster than by road on the same itinerary
Easy to book the train via Bookaway! But a bit nerve wracking not to get the ticket till just before the departure. And the online train schedule doesn't match Bookaway's schedule! Still worth it - thanks
A very simple way to book train tickets in Egypt. The tickets were even delivered to our hotel
Thank you
