About the ride from Yerevan to Tbilisi
With its hip cafes and artsy vibes, Yerevan's charm is undeniable. But sometimes, even the coolest spots call for a quick escape. And that's where Tbilisi comes in.
Georgia's capital, just a short trip away (depending on your mode of transportation), offers an irresistible mix of old-world cobblestone streets, edgy street art, and a wine scene that's basically a rite of passage for any traveler.
Plus, let's be real: there's something thrilling about crossing borders and swapping Armenian lavash for Georgian khachapuri.
There are four ways to get between these two capital cities:
Bus
Flight
Car
Minivan
Below, we'll dig into each one so you can make the most informed decision. But like most travel, it comes down to time vs money and which one you have more of.
Five incredible things to do in Tbilisi
Wander the Old Town (Abanotubani District). This is the heart of Tbilisi. Think winding alleys, colorful balconies, and quirky cafes tucked into centuries-old buildings. Don't skip the famous sulfur baths — book a private room for a steamy soak after a day of exploring.
Stroll down Erekle II Street for hidden wine bars, artisan shops, and impromptu street performances that'll keep you lingering longer than planned.
Ride the cable car to Narikala Fortress. For just a couple of lari, you can catch the cable car across the river and up to the ancient Narikala Fortress. The views over Tbilisi's rooftops are unbeatable, especially at sunset.
Once at the top, wander the crumbling walls and take in dramatic views of the Mtkvari River winding below.
Hang out at Fabrika. Once a Soviet sewing factory, now a buzzing hub for creatives and travelers. Its courtyard is lined with bars, cool eateries, hostels, and art spaces. It's ideal for meeting travelers or kicking back after a long travel day.
Grab a craft beer, sink into a beanbag, and catch live music or pop-up art shows that make this spot a local favorite.
Taste Georgian wine and khachapuri. Georgia claims to be the birthplace of wine. So, it's basically mandatory to sample a few glasses. Head to a cozy wine bar or join a tasting tour.
Pair it with khachapuri — a cheesy bread boat filled with molten cheese, butter, and egg — and you've got yourself the ultimate Georgian comfort food experience.
Hunt for treasures at Dry Bridge Market. It's more than just a flea market, it's where you'll find everything from vintage cameras to Soviet relics.
Even if you're not a big shopper, it's a fun way to experience a slice of the local vibe and score a one-of-a-kind souvenir. Chat with the vendors; many have fascinating stories behind the quirky antiques and handmade items they sell.
How to get from Yerevan to Tbilisi
With four easy transportation methods, you'll find something that works for your traveling style and budget.
Option one: Bus
Duration: Six hours and fifteen minutes
Starting price: $26
The modern shuttle bus departs from Kilikia Bus Station at least once per day (maybe more often in the high season). You can choose from two arrival spots: Avlabari Metro Station or Ortachala Bus Station. Be sure to pick the one closer to your accommodation in Tbilisi.
Option two: Flight
Duration: Thirty minutes to one hour
Starting price: $63
Flights from Yerevan to Tbilisi are the way to go if you are cash-rich or would just rather fly. It'll take less than an hour of flying time, but you still have to figure in time at the airport waiting for your flight and then immigration.
With such a short flying time, you'll barely have time for a drink before you land in Georgia.
There are a few flight times throughout the day, so head out early, and you'll be there before breakfast.
FlyOne Armenia, Georgian Airways, and Armenia Aircompany all fly this route regularly. You'll depart from Yerevan Airport (Zvartnots International Airport-EVN) and arrive at the Tbilisi International Airport (TBS).
Option three: Private car
Duration: 5.5 hours
Starting price: $200
If you've already spent time in Tbilisi and just need to get to the airport for your flight elsewhere, a private car might be the best option for you.
It's a flat fee of around $200. If you can grab two others who need to travel the same route, then you can split the cost three ways, making it about $66 per person.
You'll get picked up at your hotel in Yerevan at a time of your choosing and get driven to the Tbilisi International Airport.
Additionally, you'll get 44 lbs/20 kg of luggage, and water is provided.
Since it's a private ride, you'll get to stop whenever your bladder or a photo op calls.
This is a border crossing route, so you must have all your paperwork and visas handled beforehand.
Option four: Shared and private minivan
Duration: 5.5 hours
Starting price: $11 for shared, $198 for the whole van
The cheapest way to get between Yerevan and Tbilisi is a shared minivan. The vehicles are modern, with air conditioning and comfortable seats.
There are a few companies that run this route, and they all pick up and drop off at different locations throughout each city. It might be a mall or a metro station — read all the details when booking. There are specific pick-up times throughout the day and well into the night.
Not only is this super affordable, but you'll get to meet other travelers taking this route.
If you are traveling with a small group of up to seven people, hiring a private minivan is the way to go. Like the private car, it's a flat fee. So if six of you split the cost, it's only about $33 per person. A good deal for a private door-to-door service.
With a private minivan, you'll get picked up at a time of your choosing at your hotel in Yerevan. Then, you'll be dropped off at the airport or your hotel in Tbilisi.
When is the best time to visit Tbilisi?
The sweet spots are spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). The weather is mild, the city's parks and courtyards are bursting with life, and there are fewer tourists clogging up the top spots.
Plus, fall is harvest season. If you want to dive into Georgia's wine culture, this is when to go.
Summer can get hot and crowded.
Winters are chilly but offer their own charm if you're up for cozy cafes and snow-dusted streets.
How many days should you spend in Tbilisi?
Three to four days gives you enough time to wander the Old Town, soak in a sulfur bath, take a day trip, and still leave room for spontaneous adventures.
If you're short on time, even two days will give you a solid taste of the city, but trust us, you'll wish you stayed longer.
