What to Expect

Once you've made the most of Korcula there's only one place to head to next, and that's Hvar. Getting from Korcula to Hvar is really straightforward. There's basically just one way to travel the 61 kilometers (37 miles) and that's the ferry which is organized by Krilo (Kapetan Luka).

During the high season (June to December) there are usually 3 ferry crossings to Hvar from Korcula every day. Boats tend to depart first thing in the morning. This is good news for travelers looking to check out Hvar for a day before returning to Korcula in the evening. Return tickets are available.

As there's lots of accommodation on both islands, the ferry service is also a good way to hop from one to the other. You're guaranteed to get a much deeper perspective of this area of the Adriatic if you can compare and contrast a range of different locations.

The ferry ride from Korcula to Hvar takes a maximum of an hour and 30 minutes. There's just enough time to close your eyes or bury your head in a good book. Alternatively, you may want to catch some rays on the top deck or keep cool in the air-conditioned seating area, down below.

There's also a faster ferry that takes under an hour. It's a tiny bit more expensive but not much.

Ferries are spacious, modern, and well-maintained. They're only for passengers which is good news if you like to hop on and hop off without having to wait around for cars to disembark. You might also be able to borrow a bike and take it onboard. Cycling's a great way to get to Hvar's beaches.

Whichever ferry you opt for, both will have a snack and drink bar as well as an onboard bathroom, and a couple of communal areas where you can stroll around and stretch your legs. Ferries can get busy in the height of summer but there's plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the ride.

What to see when traveling from Korcula to Hvar

It's always a good idea to arrive early and get the best spot on the top deck. Even if you're not a sun worshipper there's still plenty of reasons to look out over the side of the boat and watch the waves, islands, and blue sky float by. Get ready to see some classic Croatian island scenery.

If you prefer to keep things chilled as you travel you can still see plenty of sea even if you're sitting downstairs in the air-conditioned cabin. Sometimes it's much more calming to watch from your window accompanied by the hum of the ship's motors. It might be a lot less crowded too.

Leaving Korcula is always one of the highlights of the ferry ride. This is where you can get a fresh perspective of the Old Town as the red roofs slowly start to disappear from view. Korcula also has lots of yachts and fishing boats moored around the harbor marina.

Keep an eye out for fishermen sitting on the edge of the large stone harbor walls. The same can be said for when the boat approaches Hvar. This is where a lot more passengers take a stroll up to the top deck to watch the ferry pull into the small port. It's an exciting time with plenty to see.

The longer you're into the summer season, the closer you'll get to sailing with the sunrise. The faster ferry keeps running from Korcula to Hvar all the way through to December. The only problem is that not many B&Bs and guesthouses will be open at this time of year but, you never know.

Sailing in the morning gives you a chance to enjoy breakfast onboard the boat. Although there's not a huge variety of snacks, cakes, and drinks, you won't go hungry. If you're really savvy you'll bring your own sandwiches or, better yet, find a local cafe as soon as you arrive on Hvar.

Hvar is a beautiful little island with lots of out-of-the-way beaches that can be reached by quiet rural tracks and minor coast roads. Getting a bike from somewhere is a brilliant idea for exploring away from the crowds and getting off the boat. Bikes are normally allowed on the ferry but check first.

Sometimes you can borrow a bike from a B&B or ask if there's a place to hire bikes on the island. The same goes for snorkeling gear. If you don't fancy buying all the gear and not being able to take it back with you after your vacation ends, why not see if you can borrow or rent some from a local?

Island hopping from Korcula to Hvar is the only way to travel in this part of Croatia. Just because you won't be onboard the ferry for long doesn't mean you won't remember the ride for the rest of your life. Sit back and soak up the rays or chat with fellow passengers and see who's going where.
