What to Expect

With its pine tree-backed beaches, cobblestone streets, and bustling cultural scene, Makarska is one of the most charming locales in Croatia. But, as you probably know, there’s one place without which no visit to the Adriatic is complete. Yes, it’s the trip from Makarska to Dubrovnik. And now, you’re going to learn all about it!

To cover the 153 km (95 miles) distance between Makarska and Dubrovnik, you’ll have several options to choose from. Number one, you can go with one of the easy and convenient bus lines, which should take you around 2.5 hours.

Two, you can make the journey by car in roughly the same amount of time. And three, you can hop on a high-speed ferry and get to Dubrovnik traveling along the beautiful islands of the Adriatic. The ferry ride takes around 3 hours but is more than worth the extra time.

What to See When Traveling from Makarska to Dubrovnik

The town of Makarska lies on one of the most beautiful stretches of land on the Adriatic. Sheltered by a bundle of lush, green Dalmatian islands, the city epitomizes the word “Mediterranean”.

If you’re headed to Dubrovnik by car or bus, you’ll be making your journey along the Dalmatian coastline. If that needs translating, think of it as a low-key version of Côte d'Azur. Dotted with delightful villages and sun-kissed beaches, this is one road trip you’ll never want to finish.

You seriously can’t go wrong with making a stop at any of these little towns. If you have the time, we recommend stopping for a coffee at the village of Blace. Here, you can watch the crystal clear Neretva River flowing into the Adriatic as the local kite surfers fly by.

Contrary to what you might think, the Croatian coast isn’t a continuous stretch of land. Your road to Dubrovnik will actually go through a 5-mile stretch of land that belongs to Bosnia & Herzegovina. The border crossing is well organized, but remember to have your passport on you.

As you make your approach to Dubrovnik, you’ll be greeted by a panoramic view of the city center, with the iconic stone walls of its fortress glistening in the distance. The bus station and the ferry port are on the western side of the city and are right next to each other.

If you’re in town for only a day, we’re guessing that you’ll be heading straight to Old Town. Luckily, the medieval gem is just a couple of miles from the bus stop. If you’re arriving by car, we recommend that you continue along the byway and make the next exit to get to Old Town.
