About the ride from Aswan to Hurghada
A visit to Aswan is a visit to the very essence of Egypt.
But Egypt is much more than archeology and Nile River scenes. With an extensive coastline along the Red Sea, it is also a great place to have some fun above and below the waterline. And the resort town of Hurghada is one of the best places to do it.
Getting from the Nile River to the Red Sea is easier than you think.
Top things to see and do in Hurghada
Hurghada has many years under its belt as a beach resort destination. Here are some of the top reasons why people cross the desert to this beachside oasis:
Go beach hopping. Unlike most places in Egypt, Hurghada doesn’t have a long history. It was purposefully developed as a beach resort. One look at the dazzling white sandy beaches, and you’ll understand why. You can either enjoy the strand in front of your resort or venture a little north or south to find your own wonderfully desolate stretch of sand. In fact, if there’s anything that Egypt’s got in spades, it’s sand!
Go down under. While the beaches are great, the biggest tourism draw is actually underwater. Hurghada is a diving mecca (not to be confused with actual Mecca, located just across the Red Sea). Pristine reefs teeming with marine life and interesting wrecks are world-class and should not be missed.
Go down under without getting wet. If you’d like to experience the glory of Red Sea diving without the need for a towel, visit the Hurghada Marine Museum and Aquarium. Not only can you see incredible biodiversity, but you’ll find it educational as well.
Shop til you drop. Haggling is elevated to a national sport in the markets of Egypt, and Hurghada is no exception. Have some fun sharpening your skills in the markets and souks in town, and be rewarded with some well-priced souvenirs.
What can you expect when traveling from Aswan to Hurghada?
Aswan and Hurghada are separated by some 554 kilometers (344 miles) of desert and rocky terrain.
While Aswan is located in the southeastern interior of Egypt, Hurghada is situated further north along the coast. Any overland trip will, therefore, take around seven hours of travel time.
From Aswan, you will likely follow the highway along the banks of the Nile.
Past Luxor, the route then meanders through the mountains and empties onto the coast. Once you’ve caught sight of the stunning blue of the Red Sea, it’s a short ride north to the touristy resort town of Hurghada.
The fatigue you feel from hours spent crossing the desert will fade away as you first catch sight of the coastline and its reefs. You’ll find it hard to imagine that so much life can exist just a few meters away from the stark beauty of the desert.
How to get from Aswan to Hurghada
Overland travel from Aswan to Hurghada is divided into three categories: minivan, car, and bus. Choosing the best option for you comes down to budget, comfort and the size of your travel party.
Minivan
If you’re traveling as a family or in a small party, this is a useful option to fit everyone (and their bags) in one place. The ride will take between five and seven hours.
Minivans offer air conditioning and sometimes even charging stations. Besides having the convenient option of booking your own private vehicle, you can also arrange to be picked up and dropped off directly at your hotels.
Private rides start at about $179 for the van. The more people you have, the less you pay.
A shared minivan — which could also include other passengers — comes in around $76 per person.
Private car
If you’re traveling alone or as a couple, a car transfer can be a less expensive option than a minivan, even if that means a little less legroom. Prices start at about $150 per van with a max of three passengers.
Once again, you should expect around seven hours of driving time.
You have the same option of being picked up and dropped off at the accommodations of your choosing or the Hurghada airport.
Bus
Making the journey from Aswan to Hurghada by bus is by far the most economical option. Tickets start at $17. It may be a shared space, but the driving time is just slightly longer, ranging between eight and nine hours, compared to a private vehicle.
Buses are rather comfortable, with A/C, and some even have toilets on board. You might want to bring a light jacket in case the A/C is a little too chilly.
Buses usually arrive and depart from a prearranged location, such as a cafe or the operator’s offices. It’s nowhere near as convenient as private vehicles, but with the money you’ll save, you will have plenty left over for a taxi to your accommodation.
When is the best time of year to visit Hurghada?
The late winter/early spring offers the best weather for visiting Hurghada. With daily temperatures hovering around 22-25°C (71-75°F) and almost zero chance of rain, many come to Hurghada during this season to escape colder climes and spend some time at the beach.
For warmer temperatures, you can visit in the late spring through early fall — just keep in mind that the summer has highs that can be absolutely blazing. Thankfully, that will make your time in the water all the more refreshing.
How much time do I need in Hurghada?
Assuming you came to Hurghada for the same reasons everyone else does — relaxation on the beach and underwater exploration — you’ll want at least three days to make it worth your while.
To really explore the many diving and snorkeling opportunities and the offshore islands, leave yourself a week.
Remember, divers need to wait at least 24 hours after your last dive before taking a flight. Fortunately, that’s a great excuse for one last day of lazing at the beach!
