Cairo to Sharm el Sheikh Route Page

Cairo's overwhelming and chaotic streets can be too much after a while, so where better to escape than Egypt’s glorious Red Sea? Sharm el Sheikh is a popular tourist hotspot with luxury all-inclusive resorts, golden-sand beaches, and adrenaline-filled day trips.

While Cairo boasts the iconic Pyramids, Sharm el Sheikh is where you’ll find Ras Mohammed National Park, a haven for underwater enthusiasts, with its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life resembling an aquatic wonderland.

But that kind of change in pace doesn’t happen instantly. You’ll first need to cover approximately 377 km (235.6 miles) from Cairo to Sharm el Sheikh.

You can choose between four options: bus, minivan, private car or plane. A plane is the fastest and most expensive option. On the other hand, the adventure can take 6-10 hours if you travel by road, depending on the transport option and how long the security checkpoints take (more on those below).

Amazing things to do in Sharm el Sheikh

Sharm el Sheikh is a haven for those seeking sun, sea, and adventure. Here are some must-visit spots in this coastal town:

  • Ras Mohammed National Park — Covering 480 kilometers of pristine shoreline and turquoise waters, the national park is home to diverse marine life and vibrant coral reefs. Snorkeling or scuba diving here is an unforgettable experience. Got some time to spare? Spend the night camping under the stars, listening to the sound of the sea.

  • Naama Bay is the bustling heart of Sharm el Sheikh and one of its best beaches. Absorb the lively atmosphere with its beachfront promenade, vibrant nightlife, and a plethora of restaurants and shops.

  • Tiran Island — Technically belonging to Saudi Arabia, Tiran is an uninhabited island ideal for relaxing, snorkeling and spotting colorful fish. The boat trip there makes for a fun and memorable day trip.

  • Old Market — Sharm Old Town feels anything but old with its fancy and touristic installations and shops. Nevertheless, it’s a lively spot to walk around at night to pick up some souvenirs.

  • Mount Sinai — Take a day trip to St. Catherine's Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated at the base of Mount Sinai. Or climb the mountain itself! The hike takes around 1.5-4 hours, depending on your pace.

Pro tip: Hike through the night to arrive at the summit for sunrise. It will be a view you never forget!

What to expect from the overland journey from Cairo to Sharm el Sheikh

If you opt for the road trip from Cairo to Sharm el Sheikh, expect very similar landscapes throughout the journey. Lots of mountains, desert and a few camels here and there.

Several times throughout the journey, you’ll stop at security checkpoints. They can look intimidating, but there’s nothing to worry about. This route is safe for all travelers, whether solo, in a couple, or a group.

Your passport will be checked at all the checkpoints, and at the first one, everyone’s bags will be inspected. This can take some time, depending on the queues at the checkpoint and the number of people with you on your mode of transport.

Besides stopping at the checkpoints, you’ll also make occasional rest stops where you can grab something to eat and go to the toilet.

Pro tip: Make sure to have small change on you, as the toilets usually are not free.

How to get from Cairo to Sharm el Sheikh

There are four ways to travel between Cairo and Sharm el Sheikh: by bus, minivan, private car, and plane.

By bus

The bus is the cheapest way to get from Cairo to Sharm el Sheikh, starting at $8. It offers more daily departures than a minivan and a selection of classes to choose from:

  • Standard/Classic: Economy seats with air conditioning

  • Deluxe Plus: More comfortable seats and air conditioning

  • Elite Plus & Elite DD (double-decker): Bigger and more comfortable seats. TVs, WiFi, air conditioning, charging ports and even complimentary food and drink.

  • Aero: Includes all of the above but fancier.

Pro tip: The bus can be the better option for overnight travel due to the extra space and more luxurious classes, but being woken up at the checkpoints can get a little annoying.

The journey takes 8-12 hours, depending on queues at security checkpoints and how quickly the bus is processed.

The buses leave from stations all over Cairo, so make sure to find the most convenient one for you. Tahrir Bus Station is one of the most popular options as it’s close to where most tourists stay in Cairo.

Pro tip: Some bus workers loading your bag onto the bus may ask for a tip before putting it on board. 5 EGP should keep them happy.

By minivan

If you’re traveling by road, a minivan is the best option when you weigh the time and cost. Only a few dollars more expensive than the bus, starting at $15, a shared minivan will save you a lot of time.

Minivans have fewer passengers than the bus, which can sometimes make the checkpoint process faster.

They are comfortable, reasonably spacious and have air conditioning. The journey time can take anywhere from 5.5 to 8 hours.

Be aware that in Egypt, the journey time is usually longer than advertised.

Make sure to check your departure and arrival stations carefully, as each minivan company leaves from its own station or office in Cairo.

Traveling as a group? You can also hire private minivans starting at $176.

By car

A private car is best if you want to minimize travel time and maximize privacy. Passing through security checkpoints should be more efficient with fewer people.

The journey should take 5-6 hours.

Cars take a maximum of three people and offer a door-to-door service, starting from $82.

By plane

Flying is the quickest way to get from Cairo to Sharm el Sheikh, with flight times around one hour. Prices start around $45.

There are multiple flights per day operated by a few different airlines.

When deciding which transport option to take, consider the time involved in getting to Cairo International Airport, waiting at the airport and reaching your hotel in Sharm el Sheikh.
