About the ride from Hiroshima to Osaka

While Hiroshima is often remembered for its profoundly moving history, it is otherwise a laid-back city known for its serene gardens and rich cultural sites like the Itsukushima Shrine.

After a couple of days exploring Hiroshima, you may be ready to experience the bustling urban energy of Osaka. Whether you travel by train or bus, the journey from Hiroshima to Osaka is both straightforward and efficient.

When you arrive in Osaka, you will be met by a vibrant metropolis home to a dynamic food scene, lively entertainment districts, and modern architecture.

The journey will take you anywhere from 1.5 to 8.5 hours, depending on your chosen mode of transportation.

Five essential things to do in Osaka

As Japan's third largest city, Osaka is known as an important cultural, historical and economic hub. There are so many things to see and do, so be sure to plan a visit that lasts a couple of days.

Below are a few things that you should not miss:

  1. Visit Osaka Castle. It is perched on its own island and surrounded by a deep moat, offering stunning views of the city. Be sure to bask in the spectacular gardens, especially if you are visiting during the autumn months when the warm-colored foliage makes it a true hotspot.

  1. Head to the lively area of Dotonbori. It is filled with flashing neon lights, colorful signs, and lively entertainment. Explore the theatres, popular restaurants, and uniquely decorated stores.

  1. Check out the Kuromon Market. This century-old market, stretching 600 meters, is where you can find all types of Japanese delicacies, fresh fish, meats, and some hard-to-resist snacks. It's a must for food lovers.

  1. Stop by the Shitennō-ji Temple. As the oldest Buddhist temple in Japan, Shitennō-ji is a historic gem. While it has been rebuilt over the centuries, the original architectural style still remains. It is possible to visit the outer grounds for free, but it's well worth paying the small fee to explore the inner temple.

  1. Take in the views from the Umeda Sky Building. The 360-degree views of Osaka from this landmark are simply incredible. There is even a floating garden that connects the two 40-story twin towers and an open-air observation deck.

The first one is the speed. The high-speed bullet trains travel up to 100 mph (320 km) per hour. This is a lot faster than the bus.

The other main difference is that trains from Hiroshima to Osaka depart during the day, as opposed to the bus, which is typically an overnight ride. If you take the bus, you won't be able to admire the scenery since it will be dark outside. However, you'll save on one night's accommodation.

Throughout your journey, you will pass by Okayama and Kobe, as well as rural towns. The architecture varies dramatically from the larger cities, so if you can, keep your eyes peeled.
