Planning Your Journey From Chefchaouen to Fes
Hopefully, you’ve had enough time to enjoy Chefchaouen, known as the “Blue Pearl of Morocco.” With its gorgeous blue alleyways and charming blue and white washed buildings, it’s one of the most unique places to visit in the country.
But now it’s time to make your way to one of the oldest cities in Africa — Fes.
As a center for trade and traditional crafts, get ready for a few busy days of exploring the medina, home to tanneries, souks and stunning architecture.
You can take a private car, minivan or bus between these two cities. The journey can take anywhere from three to five hours, depending on which option you choose.
How to enjoy your time in Fes
Within the medina walls is a bit of history around every corner.
Below are some of the best things to do while you are visiting the city of Fes:
Get lost in the medina: Explore on your own or as part of a guided tour. The medina is like a massive maze with over 9,000 alleyways full of souks (marketplace) and shops. Have your comfortable shoes on, as the only way to explore is on foot.
Take in the smells of the tanneries: From above, you will be able to watch on as the workers soak, treat and tan leather in various dyes. The two main ingredients are cow urine and pigeon droppings, so just imagine the smell. The most famous is Chouara Tannery.
Visit a madrasa: A madrasa is a religious school where students go to study Islam. Take in the extraordinary architecture either at the Bou Inania or Al-Attarine madrasas. At both, you will find spectacular marble details, intricate wood carvings and mosaic tilework.
Take a photo at the Blue Gate: Formally known as Bab Boujloud, it’s one of the most iconic monuments in Fes. It is grand and complete with blue and green motifs. You’ll find it at the main western entrance to the medina.
Retreat to the Jnan Sbil Gardens: Seeing as this peaceful garden is the only public green space in the medina, it’s the perfect place to retreat from the hustle and bustle. Inside, you will find palm tree-lined walkways with peacocks and dove coops, as well as water gardens with fragrant roses and trickling fountains.

There are three main options:
Option one: Private car

Traveling by car is one of the most convenient ways to travel from Chefchaouen to Fes.
It’s a luxury to be picked up from your hotel and dropped off at the airport in Fes, but if you plan to stay in Fes, you will need to take a taxi to your accommodation.
You can choose your departure time, get two more of your friends to join you, and each bring 20 kg of luggage and 7 kg of hand luggage. Prices start at $150 for the car.
Option two: Minivan
Journey: 3-4 hours
If you are traveling with a large group of people, opt for a private minivan transfer — starting at $74, less if you have more people. Otherwise, you can share the ride with other travelers for around $38.
Below are some common minivan amenities:
Hotel pick-up and drop-off
Air-conditioning
WiFi (subject to availability)

There are multiple buses departing daily from the Chefchaouen bus station, a little outside of the center of the city.
Buses include WiFi, air-conditioning, assigned seating and 7 kg of hand luggage. If you wish to purchase additional luggage, this can be done for a small fee.
The only drawback of taking a bus is that you will be dropped off at the CTM bus station in Fes, in the new part of the city, a 20-minute drive from the medina.
