About the ride from Marrakesh to Casablanca
Leaving the desert charm of Marrakech for the laidback ocean side of Casablanca means experiencing a completely different side of Morocco. Marrakech is known for its vibrant yet authentic atmosphere, bustling souks, and historic landmarks.
But Casablanca is more modern. It's the largest and most cosmopolitan city in Morocco.
Additionally, it's on the Atlantic Coast so hello, beach clubs and nightlife!
To get between the two Moroccan hotspots, you can travel by:
Bus
Flight
Train
Car
Minivan
It's only about 152 miles (245 km) and will take between 1 and 3.5 hours. Read all the details below.
Four indelible activities in Casablanca
Casablanca, Morocco's largest city, is a vibrant mix of modern energy and historic charm. While it's often seen as a business hub, there's plenty to explore.
Visit the Hassan II Mosque. It's one of the largest mosques in the world and was completed in 1993. It's built half on water and half on land with a glass floor for epic views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Ascend the 60-story minaret for a view of the marble carvings, detailed woodwork, and zellij mosaics crafted by over 10,000 artists.
Meander through the old medina. Medinas are the heart of every Moroccan city. It's where you want to get lost and soak in the atmosphere. With its narrow alleys, whitewashed buildings, and bustling souks, it's like stepping into history. This medina is smaller and more authentic than those in Fes or Marrakesh.
Shop for handmade leather goods, spices, textiles, and traditional Moroccan lamps. And don't forget to bargain and stop for mint tea.
Wander the Casablanca Corniche. At sunset, stroll down the palm-tree-lined promenade, which stretches for nearly two miles and is lined with beach clubs, cafés, and seafood restaurants. The entire area comes alive in the evening with locals jogging, families strolling, and street vendors selling snacks like grilled corn and fresh juices.
Explore the nightlife. Believe it or not, Casablanca has a blossoming nightlife scene.
With a mix of trendy rooftop bars, live music venues, and upscale nightclubs, the nightlife caters to a local and international crowd, making it feel a bit more cosmopolitan than most Moroccan towns.
How to get from Marrakesh to Casablanca
Lucky for you, there are five options to make this journey even easier. It's short and sweet and very straightforward.
Bus
Duration: 2.5-3.5 hours
Starting price: $7
Traveling by bus is the most popular route, as it's cheap and comfortable. It's hard to beat a $7 ride to a new destination.
Multiple operators offer this route with departure times throughout the day and night. Each has its own departure and arrival points, so when you book, try to pick one that is closest to your hotel. It'll make your life a lot easier.
All the buses are air-conditioned, but only some have reclining seats, TVs, and chargers. It's rare for a bus on this route to have a bathroom onboard, but they'll make a rest stop along the way.
Flight
Duration: One hour
Starting price: $118
Naturally, flying is the fastest way to get to Casablanca. However, at $118, you need to weigh it all out. You'll have to be at the airport one to two hours early, making the total journey two to three hours — about the same as a bus. But with a bus, you'll have over $110 left in your wallet for the fun stuff.
However, if you get car sick or just love to fly, then you do you.
Economy is the only option, and there is little time for food and beverage service — don't count on a drink or a snack.
Train
Duration: 2.5 hours
Starting price: $19 for second class and $27 for first.
Train travel is a unique way to get around Morocco. It shaves off a little time and isn't that much more than a bus.
Both first- and second-class tickets are in air-conditioned cabins with a charging outlet and a bathroom nearby. The seats recline. You'll get one bag up to 50 lbs/ 23 kg plus one handbag per person. The biggest difference between the two classes, besides the price, is the comfort level.
In the second class, you'll share the cabin with five others. In the first class, you're one of four. It's more spacious and comfy.
You'll depart from the Marrakesh train Station and arrive at the Casablanca Train Station (Casa Voyageurs).
Private car
Duration: 2.5-3 hours
Starting price: $108 for the vehicle
If you want the most comfort and control over your journey, traveling by car might be for you.
It's door-to-door service, meaning you'll get picked up at your hotel in Marrakesh and then dropped off at your new hotel in Casablanca.
You'll get to choose your departure time as well, and if you feel like stopping along the way, go for it. It's your ride.
The price is a flat fee to be split among your group. The cars fit up to four passengers.
Minivan
Duration: 2.5-3.5 hours
Starting price: $95 for a shared minivan for at least three people
Minivans are more expensive than buses, but they have the flexibility of airport or hotel pick-ups and drop-offs. The shared minivans require a minimum of three passengers.
If you're sharing a minivan with many others and your hotel isn't the first stop, you'll need to wait while the driver picks up or drops off the other passengers. This could definitely add to the travel time.
If you are traveling in a larger group of up to six people, consider hiring a private minivan to keep the costs low but the comfort high. Private minivans have a flat fee starting at $105. If you have five people in your group, it will cost around $35 per person, a great option for a private ride for you and your friends.
You'll get to choose the departure time and make stops whenever your little heart (or bladder) desires.
When is the best time to visit Casablanca?
If you can handle the heat, the summer is the best time to visit Casablanca. However, you're on the coast. Not only do you get to cool off in the Atlantic Ocean, but you'll also have those glorious summertime breezes. July and August get crowded, so keep that in mind when booking hotels for this period.
In spring (April to May) and fall (September to October), the weather is mild and pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to mid-80s°F (18–30°C) — ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
The rainy season is from November to March. December and January are the wettest.
How many days should you spend in Casablanca?
Two to three days in Casablanca is plenty to soak up the city's main attractions and get the vibe. If you have more time, an extra beach day wouldn't hurt.
Where should you travel after Casablanca?
Rabat, the capital city, offers a chance to experience a blend of historical landmarks and modern Moroccan life — think vibrant art scene and upscale cafes. It's much less hectic than Casablanca but still historically rich.
Alternatively, continue north to Chefchaouen, a charming mountain town famous for its blue-painted buildings. You know the ones. They're all over Instagram. It's a photographer's paradise with its unique, colorful streets and peaceful vibe.
