About the ride from Boracay Island to Caticlan, Panay Island

Beautiful Boracay Island sits just to the northwest of Panay Island and provides travelers in the Philippines with a sumptuous sliver of white sand paradise. Palm trees, natural forests and gently lapping ocean waves have helped to turn Boracay into one of the Philippines' best loved islands. Watersports enthusiasts – snorkelers, scuba divers, kitesurfers and windsurfers – are instantly attracted to the island's idyllic shoreline. While foodies and hammock-huggers will find plenty to occupy their time as they hang out at some of Boracay's laid-back beach bars and top notch restaurants.

Once you've had your fill of all that white sand and swaying palm loveliness, getting off the island and heading back to reality couldn't be easier. The ride from Boracay Island to Caticlan, Panay Island can be made by tourist or standard bus and ferry. The crossing to Panay Island (the sixth largest in the Philippines) takes just 30 minutes and costs no more than you'd pay for a meal out in Manila (prices start from $9). Crossings are frequent – there are approximately 42 departures every day – and booking a place on an air-conditioned bus or small, open-sided minivan means that you can get picked up from right outside your hotel or beach resort.

As departures leave pretty much around the clock, you can reach Caticlan domestic airport from Boracay whenever you wish. This is good news for any travelers looking for a follow on flight in the Philippines as you'll arrive at the airport without having to arrange any extra transport. Ferries are quite small with open sides. This means that things can get a bit choppy when the wind is whipping across this stretch of the South China Sea, which is known as the Tanon Strait

If you've got plans to see more of Panay Island then it's a good idea to book transportation and accommodation in advance. Alternatively, there are bound to be lots of taxis at the airport so stick a pin in the map and see where your fortune takes you. Just be aware that Panay is a very large island and the cultural capital, Iloilo City, is located around 218 kilometers (135 miles) south of the island's international airport.

What to see when traveling from Boracay Island to Caticlan, Panay Island

If you're taking an early morning ferry from Boracay Island to Caticlan, Panay Island you can set your alarm for a beautiful sunrise over the South China Sea. Throughout the day, ferries (the latest is 11pm at night) allow you to experience the ocean waves against blue skies and sunshine although things can get a bit choppy during the rainy season (June to November).

As you travel due south from Boracay to Panay by bus and ferry you'll see the contrasts between small island communities and a much larger and busier island. Panay Island is more akin to the mainland in comparison to tiny Boracay and if you get to explore you'll see a side to the Philippines that most tourists won't ever get to witness.

The ferry ride from Boracay to Panay is fast and functional. Ferries are open-sided and only take 30 minutes to cross the Tanon Strait. Sometimes the sides of the ferry will be closed so as to avoid the constant spray and splash of the sea. On other occasions sides will be open and you'll be able to snap a few last minute photographs, perhaps if you're waving goodbye to the Philippines for the very last time.

How to get from Boracay Island to Caticlan, Panay Island

Taking a bus and ferry

The easiest and most efficient means of getting to Caticlan, Panay Island from Boracay Island, is to travel by bus-ferry. You can get picked up at any hotel on Boracay in a small, open-sided minivan. You'll then travel to Boracay Cagban jetty port before boarding one of the frequent ferries to Panay Island. This allows you to get to Caticlan airport at whatever time you choose. However, it's always best to arrive at the airport as early as possible if you’re flying anywhere else in the Philippines. Of course, if you're not flying and want to explore more of Panay Island, you should aim to time your arrival to coincide with on-going overland transport options.

Buses on Boracay range from small open-sided people carriers to larger, air-conditioned coaches. Seating is relatively comfortable, just don't expect anything too luxurious. This route is all about getting off the island and over to the airport. There will be a good mix of travelers and tourists. Facilities are basic but safe and secure. It's certainly a good idea to bring your own food and drink for the journey although there should be opportunities to grab a bottle of water and snacks at Boracay harbor.
