You’ve seen the big-eyed tarsiers up close. You’ve stared in amazement at the never-ending Chocolate Hills. Now what?
How about hopping over to the mystical island of Siquijor?
It’s a laidback island with fewer crowds and a wilder, off-the-beaten-path vibe. Its untouched beaches, waterfalls, and folk healing traditions have a reputation that precedes them. This is no run-of-the-mill Philippine island. It’s shrouded in mystery, witches and healers.
There is only one way to get between Tagbilaran City and Siquijor — via a 2.5-hour ferry. So, take your seasickness meds and climb aboard.
Siquijor is a mix of tropical paradise, adventure, and mysticism, making it an epic stop for travelers. Here are the five coolest things to do on the island:
Cliff jump at Salagdoong Beach. What is an island getaway without a bit of adrenaline? Get ready to launch yourself into the turquoise waters from the cliff-jumping platforms. These aren’t for the faint of heart. They’re from 16 to 32 feet (5 to 10 meters) high.
If jumping isn’t your thing, the beach is just as beautiful for swimming and relaxing.
Swim in Cambugahay Falls. This three-tiered waterfall has cool, emerald-green pools perfect for swimming, plus a rope swing if you want to channel your inner Tarzan. It’s one of the most photogenic places on the island (read: Insta-famous).
Explore the island by scooter. Rent a scooter and cruise around Siquijor’s coastal roads, palm-covered hills, and tiny villages. The roads are well-paved, there’s little traffic, and you can easily visit hidden beaches, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints at your own pace.
Meet a traditional healer. The island is famous for its mystical healers, witchcraft and folklore. If you’re curious, get a traditional healing session with someone who uses ancient herbal medicine and spiritual rituals. Ask at your accommodation where the most authentic healer is and see if they can help you get to their village.
Chill at Paliton Beach for sunset. It’s an idyllic white-sand paradise with coconut trees and crystal-clear waters, often called the “Little Boracay” of Siquijor. Watch the sunset from one of the beach bars, and if you’re lucky, a few fire dancers will add to the vibe.
You’re traveling from island to island, so unless you love a good swim with your luggage, you’ll need to board a ferry. The good news is that in under 2.5 hours, you’ll be in a wild island paradise.
Prices start around $14.
During the high season from November to May, ships leave once or twice daily, so expect crowds on the ferry. There usually isn’t assigned seating, which equates to a free-for-all when boarding. If possible, try to get a window seat, but don’t wrestle the Filippina granny for it. She’ll win. Plus, you look like a jerk.
All the ferries have air conditioning, and some have bathrooms and TVs. If you really want a comfy ride, spring for the Business Ferry seats, which are larger, reclining, and start at $24.
Ferries depart from Tagbilaran City Port Terminal and arrive at either Siquijor Pier or Larena Port.
For little to no rain, clear skies, and calm seas, head to Siquijor from November to May. If you need to narrow it down, January to March is the best time to visit. Temperatures in the air and the water hover around a perfect 82°F (28°C), making it ideal for waterfall exploring, swimming, and diving.
For an authentic cultural experience, travel there during Holy Week (March/April). It’s busy, but it’s also when local healers gather and perform their mystical rituals.
Avoid visiting between June and October. It’s the rainy season, meaning rough seas and occasional heavy downpours. Neither is fun on an island vacation. Additionally, the rains bring high humidity. Think hot and muggy days and nights.
On the plus side, you’ll have the island more for yourself, and the prices for accommodations are a bit lower. Up to you if you’re willing to risk it.
This is such a unique island; you should give it at least 4-5 days. Where else are you going to meet with a healer, go cliff jumping, and luxuriate in waterfalls in one place?
After Siquijor, head to the island of Cebu for its vibrant city life, major shopping malls, and bustling nightlife — the opposite of Siquijor.
Cebu City is a hub for international flights, making it a gateway to other destinations. There are also historical sites and world-class diving in Moalboal and Malapascua.
Another option if you’re not ready for big city life is Dumaguete, a small college town with a big heart and access to some really cool nature experiences like diving with turtles on Apo Island.
