We took the bus from Arequipa to Puno (6 hours) and back with our 3 kids. The ride is very bumpy (which is not the bus' fault) so the extra soft comfy chairs were a nice bonus. Make sure to take at least Inka Suite or the trip will not be so nice. The toilet was far from ideal. 6 hours on a bus is too long to hold it. with all the bumps in the road, using the toilet was not easy.
the one thing that was not great is that the driver (both times) kept turning off the air-conditioning which made the bus hot and sweaty. I had to ask to have it turned on a few times. was it to save gas?
extra note: the bus station in Puno had wild dogs running around. One of them bit me in the leg. The staff at the bus station didn't care.
Traveling from Puno to Arequipa, our bus broke down about 2 1/2 hours from Arequipa (not the companies fault). But how the situation was handled was terrible. We were told to find a van that was going to Arequipa and that we would have to pay. They only sent 2 vans for a full bus of people and left the rest of us to find our own way. Those who got to go on the vans were just the first people off the bus & their luggage. After about 30 minutes they got the bus started and head towards Arequipa. The bus driver was flying and driving crazy I imagine trying to make up time. We arrived over 3 hours late… I get they can’t fix the bus breaking down, but how they handled the situation after was poor.
Traveling from Puno to Arequipa the bus was running late, and at an elevation of 4200 meters the steering system failed. The staff assured us we ‘d soon be on our way, but after waiting an hour in the cold I flagged down another Arequipa bound bus. I arrived there three hours late.
I had a very comfortable ride from Randall from Puno to Arequipa. He was a very safe driver, and his father came along to keep him company because it was at night. They were both very kind and we had nice conversations about the history and culture of Perú!!
The bus was very comfortable with reclining seats, nice big windows, privacy curtains, a nice footrest, and a relatively easily accessible bathroom. The ride could have been improved if the fan/air conditioning, lights, and volume control in the seats worked. Unfortunately it didn't, so we couldn't turn down the tv noise for the entire trip. The bus was easy to find and board, even for an English speaker, which is great. Be careful with the timing of the trip - my ticket said we would arrive in Puno at 6:30 and we did not arrive until over an hour after that, which really complicated my taxi and hotel arrangements. This is not the bus company's fault, obviously but just when you book, be aware that traffic can be a bit unpredictable, so it might be a good idea wait on making your taxi arrangements until you enter the city of Puno. Overall a decent way to travel!
