About the journey from Mykonos to Santorini

Are you looking to swap one idyllic Greek island for another? How about Mykonos to Santorini? The journey is simple and relatively quick, so you won’t be snapped out of your island-paradise bubble for too long.

There is a reason Santorini receives over two million visitors a year. People can’t wait to walk down the cobblestone streets surrounded by picturesque white-washed houses and capture stunning pictures near one of the blue-domed churches.

It’s the definition of a dream destination, with its unbelievable beaches and to-die-for food. Eat, drink, swim, repeat. That’s Santorini's motto!

To get from Mykonos to Santorini, you’ll need to hop on a ferry and cross 119 km (74.4 miles) of the Aegean Sea.

The journey takes 2-3 hours, depending on your chosen ferry company. Most ferries leave from the New Port (Tourlos), two km outside of Mykonos Town, and arrive at Thira in Santorini.

It’s important to know that these ferries run seasonally, generally from late March to October.

Hop onboard your ferry from Mykonos to Santorini and enjoy the views of the other stunning Greek islands scattered throughout the Aegean Sea.

Unforgettable things to do in Santorini

Santorini is seen as a beach destination, but there’s plenty more to this famous island than sipping cocktails at beach bars and lounging on the golden sand — although this does sound rather nice.

Here are a few more of our favorite things to do in Santorini:

  • Explore Santorini’s picturesque villages. What’s the first image that comes into your mind when you think of Santorini? Its iconic white villages overlook the glistening ocean below. Wandering around, taking in the views, and popping into quaint cafes and shops is the perfect way to spend a day. Oia and Fira are two villages that you shouldn’t miss!

  • Visit the Akrotiri Archaeological Site. Often referred to as the “Pompeii of the Aegean,” this Minoan Bronze Age settlement was preserved in volcanic ash. As you take in the ruins, pottery, and artifacts, it’s easy to imagine what life was like back then.

  • Relax on Red Beach. As the name suggests, this beach is famous for its red and black volcanic pebbles. The towering red cliffs also add to this iconic landscape, providing a stunning backdrop to the crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

  • Boat tour to Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni. Discover these phenomenal volcanic islands by hopping on a boat for the day. On the islands, you can hike to the volcanic craters, swim in the thermal waters, and enjoy the out-of-this-world volcanic landscapes.

  • Go wine tasting. Santorini is famous for its Assyrtiko wine, so visiting a vineyard or a local winery is a must if you’re a wine lover. Sip unique volcanic wines while enjoying panoramic views of the island.

How to get from Mykonos to Santorini

There is only one way to cover the 119 km (74.4 miles) between Mykonos and Santorini, and that’s by ferry.

The journey duration is 2-3 hours depending on which company you go with.

As Santorini and Mykonos are predominantly summer destinations, these ferries run seasonally — between late March and October. During these months, the first ferry leaves at 9:50 a.m., while the last ferry leaves Mykonos for Santorini at 7:10 p.m.

Boats primarily leave from New Port (Tourlos) in Mykonos and arrive at Thira in Santorini. Make sure to check your ticket to ensure you arrive at the right port.

During the busy summer months, it’s advised to arrive at the ferry port 45 minutes before your departure so you don’t get stuck in any human traffic jams and miss your boat.

What to expect from the journey from Mykonos to Santorini

Think of the journey from Mykonos to Santorini as an enjoyable experience rather than just a ferry crossing.

For two hours, you’ll glide through the Aegean Sea, catching glimpses of other Greek Islands covered in nature and traditional villages.

Onboard, you’ll find a cafe or snack bar, plenty of comfortable seating, air conditioning, and outdoor decks where you can feel the salty wind flying through your hair.

The number of ships offering Wi-Fi is increasing. Just in case, have some podcasts and movies downloaded. Or let the stunning views keep you amused.

Pro tip: If you’re prone to motion sickness, consider taking some medication beforehand, even if the sea doesn’t look too choppy.

When is the best time to visit Santorini?

Santorini is flooded with tourists in July and August when the weather is considered to be at its best. Almost every day is guaranteed to be warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging between 25°C (77°F) and 35°C (95°F).

For many people, this might not be the best time to visit Santorini, especially if you’re not a big fan of crowds or want to save a bit of money.

If this is you, consider visiting during Santorini’s shoulder months — June and September. Don’t worry. You’ll still be blessed with gloriously sunny days.

How many days should you spend in Santorini?

The number of days you should spend in Santorini completely depends on the purpose of your trip.

Some people head to Santorini for vacation, looking to escape the stress of life for a week or two.

However, if you’re island-hopping through Greece, 3-4 days should be enough to relax on the beach, take some day trips, and wander its picture-perfect streets. If you’re on a budget, this might be all you can afford, too!

Where to visit after Santorini?

Ios is the closest island to Santorini, only a 35-minute ferry ride away. You can easily visit as a day trip or make this the next stop on your island-hopping adventure.

Ios is known for its charming villages, authentic Greek tavernas, and great nightlife. The best part is that it’s considerably cheaper than Santorini.
