About the journey from Milos to Santorini

As your time exploring the rugged and impressive landscapes of Milos comes to an end, it’s time to head to a destination that is on most people’s bucket lists — Santorini.

Whether you are heading there to witness dreamy sunsets over whitewashed, cliff-hugging villages or to taste some of the freshest seafood in the quaint area of Ammoudi Bay, you will need to pre-book a ferry ticket from Milos to Santorini.

Your options are either a two-hour ferry or the five-hour, 20-minute ferry.

The 96 km (60 miles) will allow you time to switch off as you take in the views of the Aegean Sea. Take your book, grab a coffee on board, and sit back and relax.

As your head nods to the rhythm of the waves, you will spot the islands of Sifnos and Folegandros in the distance.

The Best Things to do in Santorini

Whether you are taking in the views from the stunning caldera or meandering your way through white-washed hilltop villages, you are bound to experience an infinite number of pinch-me moments during your time on this Greek Island.

Here are some of the things you must include on your Santorini itinerary:

  • Watch the sunset in Oia. There is a reason this hilltop town is so famous for sunsets. Unless you are willing to pay top dollar at one of the high-end dining establishments, arrive early to the castle in Oia to grab a million-dollar seat. As the sunlight changes color, be sure to have your camera ready.

  • Take a boat tour. The views looking back up to the caldera are spectacular. Not only can you admire the colors of the cliffs, but a boat tour is a great way to swim in the warm Mediterranean Sea.

  • Visit Ammoudi Bay. Situated at a quaint water's edge in Oia, Ammoudi Bay is a former fishing village. As you stroll down the 300 steps from Oia Castle, you will be welcomed by several idyllic fish tavernas serving up some of the freshest seafood. It's the place to come for quintessential Greek vibes.

  • Explore the quaint Imerovigli. This small village is found just north of Thira, the capital city of Santorini. As you wander around the cobblestone streets, you’ll pass by small churches and tiny shops. It’s an ideal spot for those looking to escape the crowds.

  • Spend the day at the Red Beach. This has to be up there as one of the most extraordinary beaches in the world. Surrounded by enormous volcanic rocks, red and black pebbles, and sand of various colors, it’s a sight to be seen. If you have a snorkel, check out the unique underwater formations.

How To Travel From Milos to Santorini

The only option for traveling between Milos and Santorini is to take the ferry.

If you have a larger budget, SeaJets is the premium option, but it will cost you more. With tickets costing approximately $101, it’s much pricier than the roughly $18 Deck Space option on Zante Ferries

Pro tip: Even during the cooler months of November, December, January, and February, ferries still run, but they are more sporadic. So keep this in mind if you plan to visit during the off-season.

Ferry Option One: SeaJets

SeaJets is your fastest option. They have a direct two-hour ferry with one departure per day.

Typically, the boat you will be on board is called the ‘Superrunner Jet,’ which can carry up to 810 passengers and 140 vehicles. Given the size of the boat, you are allowed to carry up to 50 kg per person

On board, you will have access to toilets as well as a small cafe serving beverages and some food to nibble on during the journey.

Ferry Option Two: Zante Ferries

If you prefer slow travel and have a tighter budget, you may wish to travel with Zante Ferries instead.

The Dionisios Solomos can carry 1050 passengers and 360 vehicles. Stopping at seven islands along the way, including Kimolos, Folegandros, Sikinos and Ios, this journey will take you five hours and 20 minutes. The ferry departs at 21:50 and arrives at Thira Port at 03:10.

You can expect a pleasant onboard experience with comfortable seating, air conditioning, and plenty of space to enjoy the journey. There is also a cafe/bar serving drinks and snacks, as well as bathroom facilities and luggage storage.

When booking your ticket, you will notice that you have the choice between deck space and reserved seating. The main difference is that you will not have a reserved seat when booking a deck space ticket.

This is more of an issue during the summer as the ferries are more crowded. However, if you are not phased by whether or not you are sitting with your fellow travelers, then this option is more economical.

What to Expect On Your Journey From Milos to Santorini

Whether traveling with SeaJets or Zante Ferries, you should arrive at least 45 minutes before your expected departure time.

This will allow you to check in at the registered office and check the port which you will be departing from. Keep your luggage with you, as you will load it onboard yourself.

Pro tip: Luggage is usually stored on the ground floor of the ferries. There will be staff there to assist you.

Once you have found your reserved seat or selected a seat at random, you can sit back and relax. For non-direct routes, the staff will make announcements so that you know when you are arriving at the final destination.

As you relax on board, take in the magnificent ocean views, read a book, play cards or simply sleep.

Best Time to Travel To Santorini

One of Santorini’s special charms is that your experience will differ depending on the month you visit.

If your main reason for visiting Santorini is to swim in the warm Mediterranean ocean, plan your visit between June and August. The crowds will be hard to escape, but if you want a buzz in the atmosphere, this is the time for you.

Temperatures peak in August when the daily average reaches 30°C (86 °F).

The mildest but most pleasant weather is at the beginning of May and from the middle of September until October. During this time, you can easily move around the island, go on hikes, and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere in the main towns of Oia and Thira.

The temperatures in May reach a high of 23°C (73°F) and in October they reach a high of 22°C (72°F).
