About the ride from Da Nang to Da Lat

Traveling in Vietnam is a real rite of passage and easy once you get the hang of the laid-back pace of life.

Head to the central highlands, between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and you’ll discover an authentic side of life that’s not as reliant on tourism as some of the areas closer to the coast.

You have three choices when it comes to getting to Da Lat (or Dalat) from Da Nang.

Firstly, you can fly. The flight from Da Nang to Da Lat only takes an hour and aren’t expensive. They start from as little as US$32 for an economy flight. Airplanes are modern, comfortable and air-conditioned.

Arriving in Da Lat from Da Nang by air is the best way to make the most of your time on the ground. It's a very efficient, affordable and easy option. The three airlines that we recommend are Vietjet Air, Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways. They all provide economy seats at a reasonable price.

You can also make the journey via an overnight sleeper bus. Most backpackers choose to travel by bus in Vietnam, regardless that the ride takes approximately 17.5 hours. This includes service station rest stops along the way.

Traveling by bus in Vietnam provides a close-up view of the country at ground level. Also, you'll have plenty of opportunities to get to know fellow travelers and find where they've been and plan to go.

The distance from Da Nang to Da Lat is 458 kilometers (284 miles).

Reclining seats make the journey fairly comfortable, but it’s a really long ride. You'll probably need an eye mask, earplugs and neck support to sleep all the way through the night.

The Futa Bus service has great reclining seats, practically horizontal.

Other bus seats only semi-recline. It's amazing what you'll get used to, or not, on one of these trips. It can be quite a squeeze, especially if you're tall with long legs. Remember – you can always stretch at the service stops.

Every overnight tourist bus from Da Nang to Da Lat will be air-conditioned. In addition, buses are regularly cleaned and provide just enough comfort to give you some rest for your arrival. There might also be a small basket for drinks and snacks onboard although, taking your own provisions is highly recommended.

Don't expect constant WiFi access. Connections are patchy at best, but you may get lucky around the larger towns and seaside resorts. Best advice is to bring along a few games or things that don't require an internet connection – packs of cards, travel chess, downloaded music and movies, etc.

Bus prices are really affordable – seats start from US$14. Also, as you'll be traveling through the night, you'll save money on having to fork out for a room in a guest house or hotel. The experience will stay with you for many years to come.

The third and final way to get from Da Nang to Dalat is by train. Although there aren’t any direct routes you can take a train from Da Nang to Thap Cham or Nha Trang railway stations and catch follow-on trains from there. The whole journey, including connections, takes around 18 hours.

What to see when traveling from Da Nang to Da Lat

If you're traveling by bus, you’ll get to see parts of the South China Sea coastline. White sand beaches, fancy resorts, and possibly the sun rising over the sea in the morning.

Sunset is also a point in the day to keep your eyes fixed firmly to the bus window. Although you won’t see much at night, you might pass by roadside towns and villages where night markets are bustling.

The coastal highway provides an insider look into real-life Vietnam. Roads are often packed with commuter cars, industrial trucks and other tourist buses. Although flying is relatively cheap to us, it's not always an option for local Vietnamese.

If you take the flight from Da Nang to Dalat, you can expect a clean, air-conditioned airport followed by a comfortable economy seat on the plane. Grab a space by the window and keep your eyes peeled for slices of white sand juxtaposed against cobalt blue sea and sky.
