The other choice available for those traveling to Cat Ba Island from Halong Bay is to take a minivan/ferry. There are two departures every day - one in the morning and one in the afternoon. With a travel time of around an hour and 45 mins, they are comparable to bus-ferries. Ticket prices are also very similar to those charged for the bus/ferry option. The minivans, too, are air-conditioned and come with cushioned, reclining seats and even offer hotel pick up and drop off, making this a convenient choice.
